The AARP recommends considering three key points when deciding on respite care:

1. Involve Your Loved One. The adult you care for should be in the loop when you plan time off. Their input may help you determine how long to be away and who should fill in while you are gone. Explain to them the benefits of socializing with other adults. You will provide much better care for them when you return refreshed from your time off.
2. Assess Your Needs. Keeping a detailed list of what care will be needed in your absence will give your helpers clarity while you are away. You should also decide if your caregiver will need special skills or training to take care of your loved ones.
3. Stay Organized. Using a calendar or another planning tool to note any upcoming appointments is a great way to stay organized. There are many online tools that will help you stay connected to helpers, friends and family while you are gone. Don’t forget to note your personal time on the calendar, as well. This is also a respite for you, too, caregiver!
